About Myself - My love of civil wars relics began when I was just a child - and I owe it all to my father. Every few weeks on Sunday afternoons, he would take me and my brother on walks along the Yorktown battlefield. Our mission was to see who could find the most minie balls. This eventually led to the purchase of my first metal detector, a Metrotech, at the age of 13. This present began a lifelong hobby of metal detecting. I have been fortunate to unearth many wonderful artifacts. My highlights have been finding many wonderful buttons - both Confederate and Yankee. My best Northern button was a New Jersey Militia National Guard button I found in 1991. This button had the very rare back mark of Farrant, Lester, and Co. Albert had stated in his book that this button was postwar but an in depth study of this back mark proved that the button was in fact made at the outbreak of hostilities. (NSTCW made a note of this in a 1992 issue). It is now listed in Tice's book as NJ210 giving me credit for proving its authenticity. It is now also the logo for Quartermaster General. My rarest Confederate button had been a Texas "D" button found in 1991 but in May of 2004 I unearthed an even rarer Confederate button near Yorktown Virginia. It turned out to be a solid cast Louisiana button of which only a few were known to exist. After a year of research I wrote an article, which NSTCW published, about the find and which Louisiana unit probably wore them. (This article appears in Vol 23 No. 4). This find and the resulting article have been the highlight of my metal detecting hobby. For those who would like to read the article the link is under information at this website. I have been an avid collector and digger for over 25 years. I specialize in dug Confederate artifacts. I am also a graduate of Old Dominion University and The Medical College of Virginia Pharmacy School. I am currently a pharmacist for a mail order pharmacy for animals in Richmond, Virginia. I also do part time pharmacy work in various Targets and Ukrops supermarkets throughout Virginia. This position allows me to personally view many collections throughout the state. I am also a certified appraiser in Civil War and Revolutionary War antiquities and a freelance writer for various Civil War magazines. Ofcourse I am always interested in purchasing collections, being one item or many, as well as offering consignments on my website. I also offer free appraisals.
Happy digging and collecting - John E. Harris R. Ph.
